Juyongguan Great Wall

The one that’s the closest to Beijing (but also a workout).

The Juyongguan Great Wall is a section of the Great Wall located in Changping District, Beijing. It blocks the southern end of the main pass through the mountains to the north of Beijing. It is the part of Great Wall closest to Beijing, just 50km from the walls of the Forbidden City.

The pass has been fortified since the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). The fortifications were important during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), as both of those dynasties had their capital where Beijing is located nowadays.

The Juyongguan Great Wall is a repaired section, and the appearance of the Great Wall at Juyongguan today is much the same as it would have been at the end the Ming Dynasty.

The Great Wall at Juyongguan forms a closed loop in the hills, and is not connected directly to other parts of the Great Wall.

Within the walls of Juyongguan are temples, gates, and arches, plus the Cloud Platform, part of a Yuan Dynasty temple.
