Gubeikou ‘Panlongshan’ Great Wall
The least difficult ‘wild’ wall to walk.
The Gubeikou Great Wall is a section of the Great Wall located in the north of Beijing’s Miyun district, about 120km northeast of Beijing.
Parts of the Gubeikou Great Wall date back to the Northern Qi Dynasty (550–577 AD). Most of the Great Wall seen at Gubeikou today was built in the 1500s, during the latter years of the Ming Dynasty.
The Gubeikou Great Wall is divided into two sides by the Chao River. On the west side of the river, it’s named the Wohushan ‘Crouching Tiger Mountain’ Great Wall; on the east side of the river, it’s named the Panlongshan ‘Coiling Dragon Mountain’ Great Wall.
The Gubeikou ‘Panlongshan’ Great Wall is a lightly-repaired section of Great Wall that showcases a mix of ‘wild’ Great Wall as well as sizable hollow towers and repaired ramparts. The Great Wall here is easily accessed by well-maintained trails and paths, and offers stunning views of the wall winding along ridgelines.
Highlights of the Gubeikou ‘Panlongshan’ Great Wall include the General’s Tower, a large structure that likely served as the command post for this section of the Great Wall; 24-Eyes Tower, the tallest tower on the Panlongshan ‘Coiling Dragon Mountain’ section of the Great Wall; and the North Gate, a large, repaired arch in a loop of Great Wall that encircled Gubeikou village.
The Gubeikou ‘Panlongshan’ Great Wall continues to the Jinshanling Great Wall and the Simatai Great Wall.
