Jinshanling Great Wall

The one that’s far away from Beijing but worth the trip.

The Jinshanling Great Wall is a well-preserved section of the Great Wall of China, located in Luanping County, Hebei Province, about 130 kilometers northeast of Beijing.

It runs along a mountain ridge, connecting the Gubeikou Great Wall in the west to the Simatai Great Wall in the east.

The wall you see today at Jinshanling is a restored version of the original wall, built in the 14th century during the Ming Dynasty. Modern restorations were completed in the 1980s, 2014, and most recently in 2022.

One of the main features of the Jinshanling Great Wall is its dense concentration of watchtowers, with many large, multi-level towers spaced closely along the wall.

The Jinshanling Great Wall is farther from Beijing than other popular sections, and consequently sees fewer crowds, making it an ideal destination for quiet exploration and photography. It’s also home to several annual Great Wall marathon and ultramarathon events, which are popular with runners from China and around the world.

For experienced hikers, Jinshanling also serves as the starting or finishing point for the popular multi-hour Gubeikou to Jinshanling Great Wall hike, one of the most scenic Great Wall hiking routes.

Overall, with its steep terrain following mountain ridgelines, intact parapets and battlements, and mix of restored and wild sections, the Jinshanling Great Wall is an excellent choice for hikers and photographers seeking an authentic Great Wall experience.
